Ok, before getting into this review too much, it should be noted that some members of this band were in more successful bands beforehand. However no more shall be said on that matter, as it’s not really relevant. This is Kasms’ first release and it’s somewhat different from the norm, both in presentation, and content.
For a start, it comes in a hand painted metal cigar tin, on a CD that’s about half as big as most. Amazing huh? As it goes, it is pretty nice looking, but now to stop wasting time and get on with reviewing the music. At 12 minutes long, and featuring 6 tracks this is a short and sweet introduction to Kasms. Sounding like a mix between Siouxsie and the Banshees (mainly down to lead singer Rachel-Mary Callaghan’s shrill shrieking) and The Cramps can be no bad thing, as this proves, particularly on ‘K R I H’. The band also cite Butthole Surfers as an influence, and if that doesn’t make them worth listening I don’t know what would.
These could be compared to all manner of gothic/post punk type bands but the fact is they are worth a listen and keeping an eye on in the future, Kasms are fresh, dark, atmospheric and most importantly of all interesting.
