Fluff Fest 2009- The WWHRD verdict

This was the first year I had been abroad to an out and out hardcore festival, and obviously also as a direct consequence of that fact, my first time at Fluff Fest. I was a little bit unsure of what to expect. We arrived there on Thursday in the sweltering heat, having had very little sleep the night before and flying and travelling for most of the day. After moaning about the temperature for a while we got set up for the weekend.  The camping facilities were pretty good, toilets were of festival standard i.e. not great, but there was a massive water tank near where we were camping, although that was virtual swampland by the Sunday.  Overall I must say that this was far better organised- or at least seemed to be from my experience, than many of the major festivals I have been to.  There were the odd queues for the food- which for vegan festival food was actually alright, but beyond that, it was more or less without hitches. In terms of who was there, there were a fair share of croosh kids getting their spin kicks out to xRepresentx and the like, a load of stinking crusties, and then the other kind of people that go to hardcore shows which fit into neither of those categories. Add in the odd middle aged pissed up Czech bloke who seems to have wandered in by mistake, fist pumping to some STRAIGHTEDGE rhetoric and it’s a confusing mix. Despite the relative diversity, I personally did not notice any conflict between patrons and generally there was a pleasant atmosphere. Generally I think tolerance was the order of the weekend, as even though views might differ inside- for every person enjoying the cheap beer there was a kid with an X on his hand- people seemed to realise that for the most part we were in this together, a hardcore festival existing with limited influence from the mainstream, as lame as that might be to read.

Fast Point & Hordes, 11th June @ The Fighting Cocks, Kingston

fast point fighting cocks

This gig fell right in the middle of the fucking tube strikes, which made what is usually a sub 3 hour journey from Norwich into a near 5 hour monster. It didn’t help that the actual train to London was half an hour late as well. And it was too hot. Fuck public transport. Nevermind though, i finally got to see Fast Point again, having been wanting to see them since the first time, which was as far back as October. A combination of things meant i missed out on seeing them a few times before, so i was determined to make sure i got to this one, even if it made everyone hate me. Government Warning, Wasted Time, The Shitty Limits & Hello Bastards @ Westhill Community Centre, Brighton, 30th May

This is the first live review I have posted on here in about 6 months. So it is somewhat apt that I would resume with Government Warning, one of the finest hardcore bands around today. Thinking about it I’m not sure why that would be any more apt than any other band, but fuck it, opening sentences always suck. A couple of shows in recent weeks have rivalled it, but this was without doubt one of the best shows I’ve been to all year.

The Shitty Limits & Others @ The Grosvenor, London, 19th December

hardskinxmasgig

I mainly went to this for The Shitty Limits, but I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that not only were The Stupids playing, but Hard Skin were too. Having heard of the Stupids and a few of their songs-being pretty impressed- but never checking them out, I saw this as a good chance to see one band I’m really into at the moment (Shitty Limits) but also catching a legendary UK band, and also see Hard Skin, who I had heard and read good things about. Fucked Up @ Camden Underworld, 18th December

fucked-upscreenshot009

It’s been quite a year for Fucked Up, with their second full length, their Matador debut, being released only a few months back, to pretty much unanimously warm praise from all spectrums of the music press. Rightly so, its the sound of the most progressive hardcore around today, and successfully fuses the more experimental aspects of the epic masterpiece ‘Hidden World’  and ridiculous ‘Year Of The Pig’ single, with their more accessible work, the earlier 7″s. Muncipal Waste @ Camden Underworld, 11th December

screenshot001

This was probably one of the most ridiculous shows that I have ever been to. The levels of pure absurdity however were matched only by the amount of ripping Thrashcore, stupid fun and more thrash caps in one place than I have ever seen before, or am likely to ever see again. People in shark costumes alongside inflatable palm trees, with a soundtrack of pummelling riffs delivered at a breakneck pace, it can only be one band. Municipal Waste! The Locust @ Barden’s Boudoir, London, 4th December

locustblink

After seeing their addition to the ATP Nightmare Before Xmas line-up and not even coming close to being able to afford a ticket, I was beginning to think that I would never see The Locust live. Plague Soundscapes is probably one of my most played albums ever, and they have been right at the tip of my ‘need to see live’ list for as long as pretty much any other band I can think of. Ceremony @ Carling Academy Islington, 1st December

ceremony-tour-poster

This was the first of three London shows over a couple of weeks that I had tickets for, each of which had been really looking forward to. The others were The Locust and Municipal Waste (both to be reviewed) so this show had quite some competition. Continue reading ‘Ceremony @ Carling Academy Islington, 1st December’

Cloak/Dagger @ The Marquee, Norwich, 13th November

cloak-dagger-3

First on were a band called Holy State, who were sort of Fugazi/Hot Snakes/RFTC inspired, with plenty of riffing going on. I don’t think they have been around long, and their demo is out soon, and they are well worth checking out. Continue reading ‘Cloak/Dagger @ The Marquee, Norwich, 13th November’

Half Man Half Biscuit @ The Waterfront, Norwich, 12th November

hmhb

Sporadically releasing albums since the mid 1980’s, Half Man Half Biscuit should by rights be considered a national treasure, but in a way greater exposure is not what they are about, preferring to stick to a life of daytime television. Part of the attraction of HMHB is being able to give a knowing nod when someone references a song, and feeling part of an exclusive club and initiating new members by copying them a CD featuring the ‘hits’ such as ‘Joy Division Oven Gloves’ and ‘The Trumpton Riots’. It’s all very silly, but that’s what makes it so great.

I've always seen it as the role of an artist to drag his inside out, give the audience all you've got. Writers, actors, singers, all good artists do the same. It isn't supposed to be easy. Henry Rollins
